In Germany, workers travel an average of 17.2 kilometres each way between their home and workplace. The record distances are 27.4 kilometres in Märkisch-Oderland in Brandenburg and comparatively short distances of 9.9 kilometres in Emden. Just under 60% of employees commute regularly, while the proportion working from home is growing to around a quarter. Large cities such as Munich attract millions of commuters from the surrounding area, an effect that can also be explained by rising rents in the city centres.
