The Geography of Getting Away With It.
Some 16,000 people responsible for nearly 424,000 trips have, in aggregate, drawn a rough map of where the world's laptop class actually goes. The picture that emerges from nomads.com's latest ranking is less a single hotspot than a tug-of-war between two regions: Europe and South East Asia, with America clinging to a distant third.
Europe's dominance is a matter of sheer numbers rather than any one standout. London sits second overall, just shy of Bangkok, but the real story is in the depth of the bench. Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Berlin and Amsterdam all crowd into the top ten, followed further down by Istanbul, Madrid, Budapest, Prague, Rome, Moscow and Vienna. No other region places so many cities so consistently. The reasons are familiar: a continent small enough to hop between countries for the price of a train ticket, decent infrastructure nearly everywhere, and visa regimes (Schengen specifically) that let nomads treat borders as mild inconveniences rather than hard stops.
South East Asia counters with concentration rather than breadth. Bangkok tops the entire ranking, Chiang Mai and Phuket also crack the top 30, and Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Canggu (Bali) round out a regional showing that punches well above the number of countries involved. What the tropical region lacks in Europe's sheer city count, it makes up for in cost of living low enough to make an American or European salary stretch considerably further, plus a nomad-specific infrastructure, co-working spaces, nomad meetups that has matured faster than almost anywhere else.
