Five years of change in aviation: impact on airports and passengers
The aviation industry has changed dramatically over the last five years – the pandemic, staff shortages and rising air fares are shaping the sector. Airports like Frankfurt in particular are struggling with massive challenges.
Frankfurt as an example: before the pandemic, around 22,500 people worked at Fraport; by 2023, this figure will be down to 17,840 – a decrease of almost 20 %. This leads to longer waiting times and chaotic processes.
Impact on passengers: Fewer passengers (30 million instead of 64 million expected) and rising air fares are causing frustration and environmental concerns.
What can be done?
- Improved working conditions and targeted recruitment could solve the staff shortage.
- More flexible working hours and better communication from airlines could help to increase passenger satisfaction.
- Sustainability is becoming increasingly important, also in view of rising costs and lower capacities.
The industry must now react quickly in order to secure the long-term future of German airports. The ecological footprint is also an increasingly important issue – especially now that air travel is becoming more expensive and less convenient.
