Data released by industry association Airports Council International (ACI) shows that global passenger traffic finally surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2024, at 9.4 billion travelers. This was an increase of about 2.7 percent from in 2019. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson once more held the title of the airport with the highest volume of passenger traffic last year, serving 108 million passengers, despite being down two percent compared to 2019 figures.
As the following chart shows, four of the eight airports in the top list can be found in the United States, including Dallas-Fort Worth in third place with 88 million passengers, Denver in sixth place with 82 million and Chicago O’Hare in eighth place with 80 million. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Istanbul airport, in rank 7, saw 80.1 million passengers, marking an increase of over 50 percent since 2019. According to ACI World, this is partly due to “airline expansion, infrastructure growth and enhanced global connectivity.”
In ninth and tenth positions last year were Delhi Airport in India with 77.8 million passengers (+13.6 percent from 2019) and Shanghai Pudong Airport in China with 76.8 million passengers (+0.8 percent from 2019). Shanghai’s airport climbed 11 positions in 2024.
ACI data covers 2,181 airports across 170 countries.
