America's goods-import hierarchy has been radically reordered. In the first half of 2018, China supplied 20.2% of U.S. goods imports, making it the country's largest foreign supplier. Taiwan accounted for just 1.8% and ranked #13. By the first half of 2026, China's share had fallen to 7.4%, placing it #4. Taiwan had surged to 7.8% and #3, overtaking China. Mexico ranked #1 at 17.1%, followed by Canada at 11.5%. China's share of total U.S. goods imports therefore fell by 12.8 percentage points, or about 63% relative to its H1 2018 share. The comparison measures the reported country of origin of imported goods. It does not show the full upstream origin of components contained in goods assembled in other countries, and it should not be interpreted as proof that Chinese content has disappeared from U.S.-bound supply chains.
