China fell to the fourth-largest U.S. trade partner in 2024, down from second place in 2018. Amid the U.S.-China trade war, total U.S. trade increased by 26.9% from 2018 to 2024. Over the same period, trade with the European Union rose by 21.2%, Mexico by 37.8%, and Canada by 23.2%, while trade with China declined by 11.6%.
