Productivity Gains from Using AI 📈

This chart compares the average time (in minutes) it takes U.S. adults to complete 18 common work tasks with and without generative AI tools.

The data is based on a December 2024 survey of 4,278 respondents conducted by Stanford University and the World Bank.

For all tasks, using AI to complete tasks cut down the average time by at least 60% as compared to the time taken without AI
Troubleshooting saw the biggest productivity gain from using AI, which cuts the average time to troubleshoot down by 76%
Programming and Technology Design also saw significant productivity gains, along with analytical tasks like Critical Thinking and Mathematics
Writing with AI takes the least amount of time among all tasks, with an average of 25 minutes as compared to 80 minutes without AI
Even human-centric tasks like Judgement, Management of Personnel, and Instructing saw at least 65% gains in productivity with AI
