GPT Scores High on Standardized Exams
In a 2023 academic study, OpenAI’s large language models GPT-3.5 and GPT 4 were tested and compared on several well-known academic tests, benchmarks originally designed for humans. In several tests, GPT scored in the highest percentile of human test-takers. High school and college students take these tests to qualify for courses and admission to higher education.
In the college preparatory advanced placement subject exams (AP tests), the scoring system ranges from 1 to 5, so the GPT scores in this chart show the percentile range of their score.
Exams were sourced from publicly-available materials and exam questions included both multiple choice and free-response questions. Overall scores were determined by combining multiple-choice and free-response question scores using publicly available methodologies for each exam. Percentiles are approximate.
