According to the market research firm IDTechEx, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence workloads is driving GPU power consumption to unprecedented levels, pushing data center cooling technologies beyond their traditional limits. As next-generation GPUs become more powerful, heat generation is expected to increase significantly, making conventional air cooling and even many single-phase liquid cooling systems increasingly inadequate for maintaining optimal operating conditions.
IDTechEx projects that future GPUs will require more advanced thermal management solutions capable of handling extremely high power densities while maintaining energy efficiency and system reliability. As a result, the transition toward two-phase liquid cooling and advanced direct-to-plate cooling technologies is becoming an engineering necessity rather than a strategic option. Two-phase cooling systems utilize the phase change of a liquid to absorb and dissipate heat more effectively, while direct-to-plate cooling transfers heat directly from critical components such as GPUs and CPUs. These innovations are expected to play a crucial role in enabling the next generation of AI factories and high-density data center infrastructure.
