How Four First-Time Qualifiers Rewrote World Cup History

The expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup has opened the door for more nations to compete on football’s biggest stage.

But the numbers behind the four debutants (Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Cabo Verde) show that they all reached the 2026 tournament through consistently strong performances rather than narrow qualification.

It is based on data from TrebleStats, using records from FIFA, CONCACAF, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Four nations made their FIFA World Cup debuts in 2026, but each qualified in very different ways.
Curaçao became the smallest country ever to qualify, while Uzbekistan became the first Central Asian nation to reach the tournament.
The data shows these teams earned their places with strong qualifying campaigns.

The country recorded the highest goal tally among the four debutants, scoring 32 goals during the final qualifying round.

That total included a record-breaking 32 qualifying goals overall and a hat-trick from striker Olwan that helped secure qualification.

Jordan’s campaign was also the most open.

While Uzbekistan lost only once, Jordan suffered three defeats but compensated with an attack that consistently found the net.

Their reward was a first appearance at football’s biggest tournament, where they also celebrated their first World Cup goal against Austria.

Cabo Verde, meanwhile, showed that defense can be just as important as attack.

The island nation qualified with eight wins, one draw and one defeat, matching Curaçao’s record.
