The title of all-time top goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history is the ultimate benchmark of global dominance, longevity, and scoring consistency in football.

Today’s infographic ranks 13 players who have scored 10 or more World Cup goals across the tournament’s 96-year history and 23 editions.

The data was gathered from WorldFootball.

Lionel Messi currently holds 19 FIFA World Cup goals, the highest total in the tournament’s 96-year history, and three ahead of the joint second-place players
Cristiano Ronaldo, marketed alongside Messi for two decades as co-definer of football’s greatest era, does not appear in the list.
Miroslav Klose (retired) and Kylian Mbappé (active, age 27) both have 16 goals scored.

Messi’s record is not as safe as a retired player’s record would be.

Mbappé is 27 years old, tied for second on the all-time list and averaging approximately 5.3 World Cup goals per tournament across his career.

If he participates in the 2030 World Cup at 31 and the 2034 World Cup at 35 (both realistic for a player of his physical profile), he needs just 4 more goals across those two tournaments to break the current record.

He has been scoring at a higher rate per tournament throughout his career.
