Visualized: Every Moon in the Solar System
With NASA planning to establish a long-term presence on the moon as part of the Artemis missions, and new-kids-on-the-block India and China rapidly developing their own space programs, it's worth looking beyond our own world for other lunar frontiers.
So, here are the 761 natural satellites that scientists have so far discovered orbiting planets, asteroids, and other small bodies throughout our solar system, as well as a ranking of the top 10 moons by diameter using data from NASA and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Ket Takeaways
- The largest moons in our solar system were also some of the first discovered, for example, four of the largest moons of Jupiter (Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa) were discovered in 1610 by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei.
- In addition to the 297 moons that have so far been found around Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and four dwarf planets, there are also 464 moons orbiting asteroids throughout the solar system.
- The conditions on some of the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune, could be right for extraterrestrial life, including Saturn's moon Titan, which is thought to have a liquid subsurface ocean 17 billion cubic kilometres in size
