Poll Results Show "Extreme Pride" in Being American is Falling
What we're showing
This chart visualizes results from Gallup's annual poll of American patriotism. Respondents choose from the following options: extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little, and not at all.
Key takeaway
The share of Democrats and Independents who are extremely proud to be American is currently at a very low level compared to previous years of the poll's running. While a larger share of Republicans are still extremely proud (60% in 2023), they too have seen declines from previous years.
Context
There are several interesting trends from this data. For example, extreme pride increased for all three groups following the 9/11 attacks, but gradually tapered off as the war in the Middle East progressed (other factors may have played a part too).
It's also interesting to note that extreme pride among Independents has consistently declined through both Trump and Biden's terms as president.
