I actually don’t care for Halloween. To see where I would have to go to escape the yearly Halloween madness, I found this World Population Review data set of countries that celebrate Halloween, albeit to varying degrees. A surprisingly large number of countries celebrate All Hallows’ Eve (or Halloween) or a similar autumn holiday like Dia de los Muertos. Dividing the countries into four categories of celebration, we see that even a few Middle Eastern countries have started to celebrate recently and fall into the category “growing.”

In many countries, Halloween is celebrated alongside traditional holidays, celebrated but secondary to traditional holidays or is starting to grow in popularity. Halloween is most popular in the US, Canada and UK.

In many countries, Halloween's popularity has increased substantially within the last 30 years. However, the specific form and traditions can vary greatly from country to country. For instance, while Halloween in the US typically centers around costumes and trick-or-treating, in other countries the holiday is often intertwined with other memorial holidays such as All Souls’ Day and Día de Los Muertos.

For the map of Halloween spirit per US state, AttractionTickets.com used Google Trends to track interest in ten Halloween-related search terms such as “Halloween costumes”, “Halloween décor” and “Halloween Horror Nights.” Each state was then scored out of 100 for every term, and the results were combined to create a “Halloween spirit” score out of 1000.

Looks like I definitely won’t be moving to West Virginia, so Hawaii might be the place to go!
