The State of Civic Space Around the World
Since 2018, 2.9 billion people - approximately 36% of the population π - have experienced a decrease ‡ in their ability to safely protest, assemble and express their thoughts around the world. Less than 2% of the world's population lives in a county that has open civic space, where the state enables and safeguards the enjoyment of such rights β . 80% of fully democratic countries do not have open civic spaces.
Despite the world trending towards having less safe spaces to exercise civic freedom, the people do not stop demonstrating. Around the world, people continue to take to the streets π£ , to assemble π©βπ©βπ§βπ§ , and to make their voices π’ heard.
