Some countries have a “+” after their figure because it is believed that there were more executions than officially recorded.

China’s exact number of executions is unknown

According to Amnesty International, China does not publish information on their use of the death penalty, though available information indicates that thousands of people are executed each year.

In 2009, Amnesty International stopped publishing its estimated minimum figures for China, based on concerns about how Chinese authorities were misrepresenting them.
