Countries Most Exposed to Immigration Policy Changes Under Potential Trump Presidency
What We're Showing
This infographic shows the 10 countries most exposed to immigration policy changes under a potential Trump presidency, based on The Economist's Trump Risk Index immigration score.
About the Trump Risk Index
During his tenure in the Oval Office, Donald Trump showed he wasn't afraid to make sweeping policy decisions that had impacts reaching beyond U.S. borders. The Trump Risk Index immigration score uses various indicators to measure the exposure of the U.S.’s 70 largest trading partners to tighter immigration and border policy changes Trump would likely enact if he takes the White House.
For the immigration score, higher exposure means a country has a higher number of visas issued and is more reliant on remittances from the U.S.
Latin American Countries Most Exposed
Remittance-reliant economies in Latin America, including El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, are some of the most exposed countries to a potential Trump presidency in terms of immigration policy.
Countries with a high number of visa issuances are particularly vulnerable. Mexico, the top source of immigrants to the U.S., ranks fifth on the Trump Risk Index for immigration and has a significant number of non-immigrant visas (excluding student visas) issued.
