Dogs and cats are Europe's most popular pets, but they aren't equally common everywhere. Using data published by FEDIAF in June 2026, this infographic maps the difference between the share of households owning at least one dog and those owning at least one cat.
A clear regional pattern emerges. Cat-owning households are more common across Scandinavia and much of Western Europe, while dog-owning households have the largest advantage across much of Central Europe and the Iberian Peninsula. Much of the Balkans falls somewhere in between, with relatively small differences between dog and cat-owning households. Spain stands out with Europe's highest shares of both dog and cat-owning households, while Romania is among the few countries where ownership of both pets is also high.
