This graphic visualizes the amount of sugar in popular drinks, as cubes. Sugar content was sourced from various online sources including company websites and online store listings (e.g. Walmart).
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the average American consumes 17 teaspoons (roughly 71 grams) of sugar every day.
This is more than 2-3 times the recommended amount.
The AHA also recommends people pay attention to the differences between naturally occurring sugars (such as those in fruits) and added sugars.
Added sugars do not contribute any nutritional benefit, but often add calories that can lead to obesity.
