Valentine's Day is Becoming More Expensive & Less Celebrated đź’”
What we’re showing
U.S. consumer trends related to Valentine’s Day. This data comes from the National Retail Federation’s Valentines Day Spending Survey.
The cost of love
Average household spending on Valentine’s Day has increased steadily since 2007. In 2024, the average household will spend $185.81 on gifts.
There was a considerable spike during 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic), where average spending reached almost $200.
Participation trends downwards
Surprisingly, fewer Americans are celebrating Valentine’s Day. Ever since the steep drop seen in 2014, participation has hovered in the low 50% range.
