Europe and its many seas are a real puzzle for anyone interested in observing the tides: ranging from gulfs, peninsulas, seas and oceans, the continent is home to some of the highest tides in the world, as well as perfectly calm seas (as far as tides go) where they are completely irrelevant...

The tidal range also fluctuates within a single sea: the deeper you go into the Baltic or the Mediterranean, the lower the tide. The Skagerrak and the Strait of Gibraltar are therefore places of transition.
