The Ocean's Heartbeat: tides of North America
North America and its long coastline is a real puzzle for anyone observing the tides: between gulfs, peninsulas, bays, seas and oceans, it is home to some of the biggest tides in the world, but also to calmer (but no less tempestuous) seas where they are completely trivial... In this map, explore the tides of North America, from the highest tides off the coast of Eastern Canada and some of the smallest ones scattered across the seas. Caused by a complex combination of coatline shapes, astronomical factors and bathymetry, tides are one of the most fascinating phenomenon on earth and hold a significant importance in the physical geography, biogeography, society and cultures of territories where they occur.
