Germany's groundwater is increasingly contaminated with nitrate. In northern and eastern Germany in particular, the intensive use of fertilizers in agriculture is causing levels to rise. Nitrate enters the groundwater mainly in winter through fertilizers and manure, as plants absorb hardly any nutrients and rain washes out the nitrate.
