For decades, economic textbooks claimed nominal interest rates could never drop below zero. Sweden's central bank, the Sveriges Riksbank, shattered that rule in a historic monetary experiment. This visual submission tracks Sweden's extraordinary interest rate timeline using official milestones. From a peak of 8.91% in late 1995, the benchmark rate collapsed to exactly 0.00% in October 2014, before plunging into icy "underwater" negative territory at -0.50% by 2018 to ward off deflation. Following the global post-pandemic supply-chain and inflation shocks, the Riksbank engineered a violent turnaround, aggressively hiking rates back to 4.00% by September 2023. By June 2026, the rate stabilized at a balanced 1.75%. This project maps these historical regime shifts to show the dramatic path of Sweden's monetary policy over three decades.
