Curious where US foreign aid dollars go?
Of the $82.3 billion in foreign aid for FY 2024 (the most recent fully reported year), about two-thirds was economic ($55.36B), and the remainder was for military purposes ($26.98B).
3 countries received 22% of all US foreign aid:
🔹 Israel ($6.82B)
🔹 Ukraine ($6.51B)
🔹 Jordan ($1.74B)
The chart also shows how US foreign aid has evolved over time. After peaking in the post-WWII era through the Marshall Plan, aid spending remained relatively stable for decades before rising sharply again in the 2000s during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Foreign aid obligations surged once more after 2022 amid increased military and economic support for Ukraine, pushing total commitments above $100 billion in FY 2023, the highest level in modern records after adjusting for inflation.
Despite the large headline numbers, US foreign aid still accounts for a relatively small share of the federal budget overall.
