Germany is significantly increasing its military spending: By 2025, 2.4% of gross domestic product will be invested, and by 2029, as much as 3.5%. This is primarily a response to the threat posed by Russia and an uncertain transatlantic alliance.
The goal: to make Europe more independent in terms of defense policy and to meet NATO requirements early on.
Behind the percentages are record sums: the defense budget will increase by more than 70% in five years, to up to 162 billion euros. This will be made possible by new debt.
