Interprovincial Migration in Canada

Interprovincial migration is reshaping Canada’s political and demographic landscape ahead of the next federal election. Over 6.75 million people have moved between provinces since 2000, with Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia attracting the largest numbers. In the last three years alone, Canada recorded its highest interprovincial migration totals in decades. These population shifts have prompted changes to the electoral map, with five new ridings added since the 2021 election—three in Alberta and one each in Ontario and British Columbia. As voters resettle, these growing regions are poised to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome in 2025.
