Since the U.S. announced sweeping tariff measures in April 2025, equity markets, where shares of companies are traded, across emerging economies have moved in sharply different directions. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index, which tracks country stock performance, highlights wide gaps in returns, highlighting how unevenly investors have responded across key emerging markets/economies.
Greece tops the table with a +46% return, followed by South Korea (+38%) and Taiwan (+34%). At the other end of the spectrum, India has gained just +2.8%, the weakest positive performance, while Saudi Arabia is the only major market in negative territory (–8.4%).
The overall MSCI EM Index rose +15% over the same period, signifying the divergence between standout performers and laggards.
