The world’s leading startup ecosystems, based on analysis from Pitchbook. Cities were analyzed over a six-year period ending in the second quarter of 2023, taking into account factors such as deals, exits, and fundraising to assess the size and maturity of each ecosystem.
San Francisco Remains the Startup Capital
San Francisco leads the rankings in development score and capital raised, with the city raising $427.6 billion in startup capital the past six years. This is more than double the next top startup city, New York, which raised $179.9 billion over the same time period.
Overall, 11,812 startups were based in the San Francisco Bay area in 2023, equal to about 20% of startups in America.
NYC and Beijing Tied for Second
Tied for second place in terms of Pitchbook's development score are New York City and Beijing. In terms of capital raised over the past six years, New York City raised $179.9 billion, edging out Beijing with $161.2 billion.
New York is home to 6,951 startups and 130 unicorns, with crypto firm Gemini and machine learning company, Hugging Face, two examples of startups based in the city.
As the top-ranking hub outside of America, Beijing is home to TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, which is one of the most valuable private companies in the world.
