Bitcoin's Share of Crypto's Market Cap Over Time

What We’re Showing
This chart tracks Bitcoin’s dominance, or its share of the total cryptocurrency market cap, from 2014 to 2025.
The data, sourced from TradingView, highlights major milestones that shifted capital in and out of Bitcoin relative to other cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin's Dominance Over Time
Bitcoin’s dominance began near 100% in 2014, but started to fall after the launch of Ethereum in 2015, with the ICO boom of 2017 seeing it plunge below 40%.
In 2018, a broad crypto market crash wiped out over 65% of cryptocurrencies' value, and Bitcoin regained share as investors left altcoins behind.
The 2021 surge of decentralized finance (DeFi) and Ethereum’s rise past $4,000 dented Bitcoin’s market share again, though Bitcoin later rebounded following the collapse of FTX in November 2022.
As of 2025, Bitcoin’s dominance has climbed back above 60%, fueled by ETF approvals and increasing institutional adoption, reinforcing its role as the anchor of the crypto market.
