Here are just a few of the news events that took place around the world this week:
- Russia’s 3-day presidential election kicked off. While there are other names on the ballot, President Putin is expected to win handily
- The European Parliament approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, introducing standards for AI regulation. The regulation looks at AI through the lens of risk categories, which will range from low hazard to “unacceptable” — which could result in a ban.
- The ordering system at McDonald's suffered a global outage on Friday. The company was quick to state that the issue was ‘not related to a cybersecurity event'.
- Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, agreed to resign this week as gang violence ragedon and international pressure mounted. As the situation deteriorated in the beleaguered nation, gangs had cut off Port-au-Prince from the rest of the country and blocked the city's primary port.
- The U.S. and Japan conducted joint military exercises as tensions with China increase in the region. The most recent military drills were held in Okinawa.
- Thousands of farmers protested in New Delhi, India, demanding minimum crop prices and government support ahead of elections. Authorities reportedly tightened security and barricaded highways leading to the capital in an attempt to quell the protest.
- Reddit unveiledits IPO ambitions this week, aiming to raise $748M at a ~$6.5B valuation. Reddit will trade under the symbol “RDDT" on the NYSE.
