The number of international graduate students in the United States nearly doubled over the past two decades, rising from 244,398 in 2000/01 to 488,481 in 2024/25. Graduate students now account for 41% of all international students in the U.S., underscoring the country’s continued dominance as a global hub for advanced education.
Asia remains the primary source region, contributing 372,867 students (76%), followed by Africa (32,706; 6.7%), Europe (26,373; 5.4%), Latin America (24,822; 5.1%), and Canada (9,887; 2.0%).
By country, India (177,892; 36%) and China (120,229; 25%) together represent 61% of all international graduate students in the U.S. in 2024/25. Other major contributors include South Korea (14,836), Bangladesh (13,016), Nigeria (11,617), Taiwan (10,205), and Iran (10,154).
