Since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the gap between foreign holdings of U.S. financial assets and U.S. holdings of foreign financial assets has widened significantly. From Q2 2007 to Q2 2025, foreign holdings of U.S. financial assets grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.3%, rising from $17.0 trillion to $60.6 trillion. In contrast, U.S. holdings of foreign financial assets increased at a slower CAGR of 4.7%, growing from $15.9 trillion to $36.2 trillion. As a result, the net foreign financial asset position in the U.S. expanded at a rapid CAGR of 19.4%, rising from $1.0 trillion to $24.4 trillion over the same period.
