How prevalent is depression across Latin America? The latest data from the World Population Review provides a critical perspective on this often-overlooked public health challenge.
The disparity across the region is significant. Chile records the highest prevalence at 5.46%, followed by Argentina (4.70%) and the Dominican Republic (4.58%). At the other end of the spectrum, countries like Colombia and Bolivia report the lowest rates in the sample, at 2.80% and 3.24%, respectively. This gap highlights the varying psychological impacts of socioeconomic pressures, urbanization, and access to mental health infrastructure across the continent.
The data underscores a fundamental reality: sustainable development is intrinsically linked to mental health. Without integrated public health strategies to address these disparities, regional growth will continue to face inherent limitations in human productivity and collective prosperity.
