Smokers – A Truly Dying Breed?

Disposable e-cigarettes banned! As of January 1, 2025, Belgium has prohibited the sale of disposable e-cigarettes. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke called them a “plague,” particularly appealing to young people—a move sparking discussions in Germany as well.
At the same time, the perception of smoking in Germany is shifting: cannabis has been legal since 2024 and while e-cigarettes and cannabis are booming, the share of cigarette smokers continues to decline — to just 12.8% by 2025. Young people, in particular, are turning away: 83% of 12–17-year-olds had never smoked as of 2024.
E-cigarettes are often marketed as healthier alternatives, yet studies show their chemical ingredients can pose serious health risks, especially when inhaled.
Health trends, vegan diets, and a focus on mindfulness among younger generations play a major role—and are saving the healthcare system billions.
