Care in Germany is becoming unaffordable for many. More and more people in need of care are faced with too few staff and rising co-payments. The number of people affected alone has risen from 2 to almost 6 million since 1999, while staff shortages are even leading to the payment of ‘bounties’ for skilled workers. Longer life expectancy, a shortage of skilled labour and fewer contributors to the health insurance funds are pushing the healthcare system to its limits, with consequences for those affected and their families.
