UN Member States Not Recognized by Other Members

UN Member States Not Recognized by Other Members

There are currently 193 member states in the United Nations (UN). However, not all states are recognized by other states. This graph shows countries (member states) who are not recognized by at least one other country (member state). “Not recognizing” can include ceasing all diplomatic and foreign relations with another nation. The chart is limited to member states only and does not include observer states (Palestine), partially recognized states (Kosovo, Cook Islands, Niue), and countries not recognized by the UN as a sovereign nation, though recognized by other countries (for example, Taiwan).

METHODOLOGY NOTE: I initially created the graphic to include Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan (Republic of China) but it was unreadable due to the large number of nations (chords). Because of this, I chose only to use UN member nations. Let me know if you'd like a graph that shows observer and de facto states recognition. In some cases, it's easier to show the nation/states that DO recognize another rather than the ones that do NOT.
