Context

The Islamic State (IS), which primarly operates in Iraq and Syria, has several affiliate groups based in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Egypt. The group’s reach is even broader than this, though, with recent attacks in other countries like Russia and the Philippines.

Al-Shabaab, the second group on this list, is an Al-Qaeda affiliate that gained recognition for its attacks in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
