More and more winegrowers in Germany are having to give up their businesses. Small businesses are particularly affected: their number has almost halved since 2010, while large wineries and vineyards in general are even growing slightly. This reflects the structural change in agriculture, which is increasingly affecting the wine sector as well.
The difficult situation is the result of several factors. In addition to rising production costs, the industry is suffering from competition from cheap imported wines and a change in the consumption habits of younger generations.
