Where Data Tells the Story

Capcom's remake strategy isn't just about nostalgia; it's the financial engine for the entire franchise.
Resident Evil 2 leads the franchise's all-time sales with 19.75 million units, surpassing giants like Resident Evil 7 (18.41M) and the recent Resident Evil 4 Remake (16.04M). According to producer Masachika Kawata, this business model has a clear objective: the massive revenue generated by the remakes funds the costly development of new mainline entries (such as the recent Resident Evil Requiem, which has already broken the 8-million-copy barrier) and allows them to maintain an annual release cadence.
The data proves that this cycle works flawlessly. The anticipation for the upcoming Resident Evil Veronica, scheduled for next year, continues to drive consumption across the entire back catalog. For now, Capcom has no interest in developing spin-offs; all their energy and budget are focused on this lucrative cycle of high-budget remakes and sequels.
