Just five countries—China, India, the U.S., Indonesia, and Japan—accounted for 80% of the world’s growing coal consumption in 2025. The biggest driver of rising demand was the United States, with a year-over-year increase of 10%.
This graphic uses data from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2026. It ranks regions by change in coal consumption between 2024 to 2025 in exajoules (EJ).
For reference, a single exajoule of energy can power approximately 25 million U.S. homes for a year.
