Where Data Tells the Story

Across 36 European countries with available data, more than 325 million passenger cars were registered in 2024. In 20 of them, petrol is the main fuel; in the other 16, diesel still comes out on top. This split follows a clear geographic pattern. Petrol is more common in Western and Northern Europe, with some of the highest shares in the Netherlands, Cyprus and Finland. Diesel, on the other hand, is more prevalent in the Balkans and parts of Eastern Europe, including countries like Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.
Even within the EU, the picture remains mixed, with 10 member states where diesel cars outnumber petrol ones, mostly in the South and East. Taken together, petrol makes up about half of all cars, while diesel accounts for just over four in ten.
