Global leaders in renewable energy consumption

Global leaders in renewable energy consumption
The pursuit for decarbonization and sustainable development has significantly influenced countries to incorporate more renewable sources into their energy systems.
This infographic illustrates which countries have the highest share of renewable energy consumption relative to their total primary energy use.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy derived from natural resources that are replenished faster than they are consumed. Sunlight, water, wind, biomass are examples of renewable energy sources that are abundant and widely available.
Generating renewable energy produces far fewer emissions than burning fossil fuels. Renewables are now cheaper in most countries, and generate three times more jobs than fossil fuels.
Europe at the Top
European countries take the lead in renewable energy consumption, especially the Schengen countries. Norway is at the top with 72% of its primary energy coming from renewable sources. Sweden follows at 54% and Denmark ranks fourth at 43%.
South American countries also have a decent share, with Brazil securing third position globally with 50%. In North America, only Canada reaches a notable 42%, while New Zealand leads Oceania with 29%. Germany, a G7 member sources 24% of its primary energy from renewable resources.
Major Role of Hydropower
Hydropower is the major source of renewable energy production globally. Countries with significant hydroelectric potential have successfully integrated renewables into their energy consumption systems.
Positive Shifts Outside Europe
South American countries have made significant progress in recent decades. Brazil, Chile, and Colombia have nearly doubled their reliance on renewable energy.
Remarkable Performance from Germany
Germany increased its share of renewables from just 4% in 2003 to 24% in 2023, a huge 20% rise in less than 20 years. A major portion of this comes from wind power.
