Global Energy Demand Growth 2024

⚡ Energy Demand Growth, by Source in 2024
Global energy demand increased by 2.2% in 2024, adding 13.9 exajoules (EJ) to total consumption. This growth was led overwhelmingly by renewables, which accounted for 38% of the increase—driven by a record 700 GW of renewable capacity additions.
Here’s how the rest of the demand growth breaks down:
- 🔸 Natural Gas: 28%
- ⚫ Coal: 15%
- 🛢️ Oil: 11%
- ☢️ Nuclear: 8%
The shift underscores how renewables are not only the fastest-growing source, but also central to meeting rising global energy needs. Yet, fossil fuels still represent a significant share—highlighting the ongoing complexity of the energy transition.
