America’s renewable energy story began long before modern wind turbines and solar panels. In 1950, wood supplied more than four-fifths of the country’s renewable energy, while hydroelectric and geothermal sources accounted for nearly all the remainder.
Since then, the mix has been transformed by the growth of biofuels, wind, and solar.
Data for this visualization comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and tracks annual production from 1950 through 2025 across wood, hydroelectric and geothermal energy, waste, biofuels, wind, and solar. The figures measure primary energy production, not electricity generation or installed capacity.
