A study by the Stifterverband shows how strongly educational pathways in Germany still depend on social background. While 79 per cent of children from academic households go on to university, the figure for children from non-academic households is only 27 per cent. These differences are not only due to financial issues, but also to a lack of information, role models and mental barriers that make going to university seem more like a risk than an opportunity for many.
Targeted support can already have an impact: even short information workshops on the costs, funding opportunities and benefits of studying can significantly increase the number of children from non-academic households who take up a place at university.
