In April 2025, amidst rising anxieties over global tariff implementations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) released a bleak forecast projecting that global merchandise trade volume growth would contract by -0.2%. However, as the year progressed, a counterintuitive trend emerged: rather than freezing trade, import partners rushed to beat incoming tariff deadlines, leading to a massive wave of panic-buying and frontloading. This forced the WTO to progressively lift its growth projections to 0.9% in August and 2.4% by October. When the final numbers were tallied in March 2026, the preliminary estimate for actual 2025 global trade growth stood at a roaring 4.6%—surpassing the initial April 2025 forecast by a stunning 4.8 percentage points. This submission tracks the progression of these official WTO vintages to show how defensive trade maneuvers paradoxically sparked a short-term trade boom.
