The Federal Employment Agency published its 2025 wage data in July. It shows that a newly rented 50 m² apartment now takes 24.0% of a median full-time earner's net income in western Germany, compared with 21.6% in the East excluding Berlin.
In 2014, it was the other way around. Since then, advertised rents in the West have risen by 61% and net wages by only 36%, while in the East the two grew almost in step.
