Over the past quarter-century, global goods trade has expanded sharply, while its category mix has also shifted.
The $51.4 trillion figure combines merchandise imports and exports, meaning it captures both sides of international trade. By comparison, the World Trade Organization (WTO) values world merchandise trade at $26.3 trillion in 2025 when measured by exports alone.
