Insolvencies in Germany by Sector

The number of insolvencies in Germany continues to rise rapidly: In the first quarter of 2025, there were 52 percent more bankruptcies than in 2020. Sectors particularly affected include construction, courier services, and gastronomy—across the board, surging costs, staff shortages, and shrinking margins are forcing businesses to close.
The outlook remains bleak: Up to 26,000 insolvencies are expected in 2025, marking a new high since 2015. Economic uncertainty and consumer restraint are putting pressure on almost all sectors.
